Feathering
Performative installation as part of IM KINOSAAL, , Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, 2025
Feathering is a six-day audiovisual performative installation which explores the longing for a connection with a nature that is as familiar to us as it is alienated. The fulfillment of this longing is not the goal, but the journey as a cycle, a ritual that is constantly renegotiated in image, sound and movement.
In the Kinosaal of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, two temporal layers interweave. A drone image is projected onto the wall, showing a kayak gliding silently over the surface of the water in an endless loop. Visually, the kayak resembles an eye, endlessly traveling through an unspecified aquatic landscape, steered by a paddle adorned with feathers. In parallel, a second layer unfolds within the space itself: from within a translucent, internally illuminated tent, a live soundscape gradually emerges over the course of the six days, consisting of field recordings and the voice as well as synthetic sounds.
With this constellation, a dialogical structure is created between the senses, between sight and sound, body and landscape, the visible and the hidden. While the filmic documentation shows a past but seemingly endless performance, the music is created in the moment - it reacts, transforms, translates. From the live recording of this soundtrack of the gaze, a 42-hour album is created, which archives the auditory visualization of the landscape around the eye as a soundtrail to the journey.
